A Cruelty-free Chinese New Year

With the coronavirus pandemic making people more conscious of the need to eat healthily, restaurants and food retailers are creating culinary delights for those leaning towards a vegan, or plant-based, diet, which involves no animal products such as meat, fish, eggs, milk or butter.

1. Traditional festive cakes
For the OmniPork vegan XO sauce cake, replaces the unhealthy Chinese traditional cured meat, containing all the same flavour but without the risks associated with processed meat preservatives.

2. Festive casserole
18-ingredient vegan poon choi, a traditional layered casserole dish made for communal sharing. This meat-free version includes mushrooms, yam, lotus root, yellow fungus, elm fungus, bamboo fungus, turnip, broccoli and bean curd sheets.

3. Cookies and chocolate
Chinese New Year vegan cookie and chocolate gift box that includes red dates from Xinjiang, 18 cookies made from oolong tea leaves from Taiwan, 12 ginger cookies and 20 sugar-free mendiants – traditional French dark chocolate discs studded with coconut flakes and goji berries.
